Shin guards and socks are important parts of the uniform of every soccer player. Shin guards absorb the impact of hard kicks and tackles, preventing injury. Soccer socks get pulled up high to keep the shin guards securely in place for when they are needed. Shin guards were once an optional accessory, and often made from sheets of newspaper or wood, according to the Soccer Training Info website. Now, soccer shin guards are light and durable, made from polypropylene, foam and plastic.
Step 1
Remove your shoes and socks so your feet and lower legs are bare. Cover any cuts or cracks in your skin with a clean bandage.
Step 2
Slide your feet into the sleeve of the shin guards. Pull your foot into the stirrup at the bottom, if the brand of shin guard you have has stirrups. Pull the shin guard high enough so you have free ankle movement if there is no stirrup to guide you.
Step 3
Attach the Velcro straps at the top of the shin guard if your brand is equipped with them. Pull your sock onto your foot and up over the shin guard to just under your knee. Adjust the shin guard so it is in place to protect your shins.
Tips and Warnings
- Some players apply tape around the bottom of the shin guard to keep it from sliding around during play. Cut the stirrup at the bottom if you feel it hinders your movement in any way.
