California has long stretches of coastline, home to countless varieties of fish. For the avid angler, a California fishing vacation can include some of the best bass fishing in the nation, as well as other species found in state lakes. Saltwater fishing is also very prominent with the tuna, mackerel and barracuda found in Southern California. If you opt to stay with the freshwater of Northern California's streams, salmon is often a sure catch during the right time of year.
Lake Fishing
California is full of hidden away fishing destinations perfect for both vacation and active catches. Lake Hemet in the San Jacinto Mountains is one example of this. Located in Southern California near Riverside County, you'll find 420 surface acres with more than four miles of shoreline. As part of the San Bernadino National Forest, pets and families are welcome. Keep the kids active with the horseshoe pits and playground, and stick around long enough to check out the hiking trails when you're through with your day of baiting and catching.
Southern California Coastal Fishing
Southern California has many spots for fishing vacations. If you kayak fish, or have always wanted to try, check out the sea around Malibu. Many have found prime catches in this region, and the physical task of rowing the kayak and fishing in a single day provides a great workout.
Pier fishing is also popular with coastal fishermen in Southern California. Goleta Pier is top-rated for this sport, and you can usually find something biting. Pier access is simple and convenient, and you can try your luck at hooking a halibut, corbina or bass.
Balboa pier is rated top-notch not only by anglers, but by honeymooners as well. As one of the most romantic destinations in California, why not spend an evening fishing at sunset with the one you love. The catches are great, and you likely can't beat the company. There will also be little competition for a prime catching spot. Most fishermen return to their homes or vacation property after the peak daytime hours.
Northern California Coastal Fishing
While Southern California is about calm coastal fishing with the added physical thrills of kayaking or casting from a pier, Northern California, in contrast, has rivers with rushing rapids and well sought-after species such as salmon and steelhead. To catch the elusive steelhead during fishing season, have a 12 to 25-lb. test line, surgical tubing with lead weight in the middle, and a 15 to18-inch leader. Your hook size should be a 1 or 2/0. Vacationers need to know North Coast rivers require barbless hooks, and a failure to supply these on your fishing excursion may result in a hefty fine.
Deep Sea Fishing
Deep-sea fishing is popular in many areas of California, but it's best to go with a private boat company if your budget allows. A fishing vacation can mean both relaxation and exhilarating sportsmanship, and businesses such as Newport Landing Sportfishing have a balance of both. With customized departure times and trip lengths to serve your group, you can upgrade to an all-inclusive meal package or just enjoy the open water for a few hours. Deep-sea fishing equipment rental is available, along with sunscreen, sunglasses, and other outdoor equipment you may have forgotten.
Competitions
Some friendly competition during your fishing vacation can give your self-confidence a boost and even more memories to take back home. There are fishing derbies and festivals all over California, especially at piers and in well-populated areas where local kids don't necessarily get the opportunity to fish. California hosts more derbies and fishing competitions than almost any other state.
If you visit in the spring, check out the annual Catfish Derby in Clear Lake during May. As the largest west coast catfish tournament, it features both adult and children divisions, and has affordable entry fees.
In Southern California, the Huck Finn Fishing Derby in Huntington Beach is for both families and competitive solo fishermen. You can enjoy free pier fishing and the halibut derby in Marina del Ray as well.
