Memory loss frequently accompanies the natural aging process, according to a review in the journal "Biogerontology." Certain natural herbs may help. However, memory decline can sometimes signal a serious health issue. Your health care provider can provide you further guidance as to whether these herbs are appropriate for you.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba is derived from a large tree that is native to China, though the tree is now also cultivated in North America. Modern gingko biloba supplements are made from its leaves, although its seeds and leaves are both used in traditional Chinese medicine. According to "Biogerontology" by Dr. Carlos Ferrari, gingko biloba enhances blood flow, conserves neurotransmitters and protects cells from the effects of harmful free radicals. The research remains inconclusive, but Dr. Ferrari states that Gingko biloba may be useful in combating memory impairment and age-related dementia. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the most effective dose is greater than or equal to 240 mg daily. Gingko biloba may cause adverse affects when combined with antidepressants, anticonvulsive medicines and anticoagulants. Ask for your physician for advice before taking it.

Guarana

Guarana is a fruit-bearing plant native to the Brazilian rain forest. The use of guarana as a stimulant is traditional in Brazilian culture, where it is primarily consumed as a tea. Guarana is a popular addition to commercial energy drinks. It is also available as a standalone supplement. The concentration of caffeine in guarana seeds is twice that of coffee beans. A study at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom found that volunteers who were given guarana showed significant gains in memory, alertness and contentment compared to a control group that received a placebo. According to the study's authors, the effects were not solely due to the caffeine present in the herb. Larger trials are necessary before guarana can be widely recommended as a memory enhancer.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is a small flowering member of the parsley family. It readily grows along low, wet areas and ditches in southeast Asia. Recognized as a medicinal plant for centuries, gotu kola has traditionally been used for wound healing, venous insufficiency and psoraisis, in addition to its use as a cognitive enhancer. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, gotu kola contains triterpenoids, substances that may decrease anxiety and help with mental acuity. Preliminary animal studies indicate that gotu kola may prevent memory loss and reduce the oxidative stress that has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease, according to an article in "Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology & Physiology." More studies are necessary. Your health care provider can advise you as to whether gotu kola is appropriate for you.
