Side Effects of Yasmin

Yasmin is a form of hormonal birth control. A woman on Yasmin must take 21 active pills followed by seven inactive pills. During the inactive pills, she will have her period, which is why Yasmin is sometimes used to regulate a woman's menstrual cycle. Despite the benefits of Yasmin, there are many side effects that must be considered prior to filling a prescription for the drug.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Yasmin include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and bloating. Some women also experience breast tenderness and weight gain. Menstrual cycle irregularity may also occur; however, many women only experience spotting and/or bleeding between periods. Some less common side effects include unusual tiredness, vaginal irritation or dryness, edema (swelling of hands and feet), trouble sleeping and mood changes, such as depression.

Allergic Reactions

As is the case with most medications, allergic reactions are possible when taking Yasmin. Signs of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, hoarseness, tightness in the chest and itching. A rash or hives may be present. Swelling of the tongue, mouth, face and/or lips is also possible.

DVT and Pulmonary Embolism

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism are possible complications of taking Yasmin. Signs of DVT include leg cramps, calf pain, redness on the affected spot on the leg and swelling in the legs or feet. Signs of pulmonary embolism include unexplained shortness of breath, coughing up blood and sharp chest pains. Sometimes, nervousness may accompany the other symptoms of the pulmonary embolism. Any of these signs warrant a trip to the doctor's office or emergency room.

Heart Attack

Women taking Yasmin should pay attention for signs of a heart attack or stroke. According to the American Heart Association, signs of a heart attack include chest pain, nausea, pain in the stomach, jaw, neck, shoulder or arm, and shortness of breath. The signs of a stroke include numbness of the limbs or face, especially when it occurs on only one side of the body, trouble walking, visual disturbances, dizziness, a sudden severe headache, confusion, and trouble speaking. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call 911 immediately.

Liver Damage

Anyone taking Yasmin should be on the lookout for signs of liver damage. One sign of liver damage is jaundice, which is yellowing of the skin and/or eyes. Other signs include a fever and loss of appetite accompanied by dark urine or pale stool.
