Colleges and universities across the country offer two- and four-year programs that prepare nurses for to practice in the health field. These schools offer nursing coursework in physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, nutrition, emergency treatment and patient care technologies. In Texas, numerous schools offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs.
Central Texas
The University of Texas at Austin is a major center of nursing education in Texas. All nursing programs are fully accredited, and the school has a student-to-teacher ratio of 18-to-1. The university has various campuses that offer different courses in nursing. BSN programs offer studies in both practical and theoretical aspects, which provide a foundation for master's and doctoral degrees in nursing. The RN-to-BSN program provides registered nurses a gateway to graduate-level education and advanced-practice nursing roles. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses--the NCLEX-RN--to become licensed RNs, which are registered nurses.
South-Central Texas
Wayland Baptist University's nursing school is completely housed on the San Antonio campus. The school offers students two options: a four-year traditional BSN program that trains students to become competent nurses who can deliver patient care in diverse health-care environments and an RN-to-BSN program that allows students who are already registered nurses to complete their BSN degrees in two years.
South Texas
South Texas College's Nursing and Allied Division provides choices in both associate degree and certificate programs in nursing. The programs combine high-quality instruction with clinical experience in hospitals and community settings. The school offers a vocational nursing certificate program attainable in either three or four semesters, while its Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing consists of five semesters of coursework. This degree prepares students for the NCLEX-RN.
North Texas
The Wilson School of Nursing in Wichita Falls, which is northwest of Dallas, offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. The school has four-year pre-Licensure BSN, RN-to-BSN and MSN programs. The pre-licensure BSN program is for students who are not yet RNs. It combines innovative technology and hands-on clinical experiences with traditional classroom learning to teach students the skills they need to become competent nurses. The school uses a variety of teaching methodologies.
East Texas
The Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches Texas, offers a BSN program. In the first two years of the program, students complete prerequisite courses, after which they continue with nursing courses and clinical experience. After graduating, students take the state board licensing exams to become RNs. The school provides state-of-the-art simulation equipment to train for real-life scenarios.
