Just because it's raining or snowing outside doesn't mean that your kids can't engage in sporting games inside. Think creatively, purchase some lightweight foam balls and adapt popular outdoor games to play inside your house. If that seems a little too dangerous for your liking, take your kids to a local recreation center to engage in more traditional games that you can play in an indoor gym.
Table Tennis
You can find a table tennis set at a local sporting goods store for a few hundred dollars, but for rainy days you'll find the investment was priceless. Table tennis provides kids with a controlled setting for sports activity with little risk of injury. You won't have to worry too much about the game getting out of control or a flying ball breaking a window. Additionally, according to the website Killerspin, playing table tennis improves hand-eye coordination, reflexes and mental puzzling—all skills that your children can apply to other sports and activities.
Foam Bowling
If you have little kids who just need something to keep them entertained, set up a mini-bowling alley in one of your hallways. Set up nine plastic cups at the end of the hallway and mark a line on the opposite side for your children to stand behind. Instruct them to roll a foam ball toward the cups to see how many they can knock over. This could keep them entertained for hours as they have to set up the "pins" each time they bowl before trying again. Encourage your kids to think creatively and make up variations on the game, such as tossing the ball toward the pins and seeing how many they can collapse from above.
Gym Games
You can accompany your kids to a kids' gym or a local recreation center during its family hours to play indoor sports. Basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer are options often available at this type of facility. Some facilities will even offer non-traditional sporting equipment like scooters, recess balls, dodge balls or pickleball sets. If it's not immediately obvious what sports you can choose from, ask an attendant what types of sports games they have equipment for and encourage your kids to expand their horizons and try something new.
