A navel or umbilical hernia occurs when a portion of the intestinal tract pushes through a weak part of muscle near the belly button. This type of hernia is diagnosed most frequently in infants, but can also affect adults. People who develop navel hernia symptoms should receive further evaluation and care from a medical professional.

Skin Discoloration

Skin discoloration at the site of the navel hernia can occur as a symptom of this condition in certain people. The affected skin site may appear unusually red, blue or gray in color and may be swollen or puffy, Drugs.com reports.

Abdominal Pain

Though children with this condition often do not experience pain, certain people can develop abdominal discomfort due to a navel hernia, MayoClinic.com reports. Sensations of pain may localize to the site of the hernia and can be exacerbated by certain physical movements, such as coughing, lifting, crying or sneezing. The skin surrounding the navel can also be tender to the touch.

Mass at Navel

People with a navel hernia develop a protruding mass at the belly button. The mass is typically fleshy and soft to the touch and may disappear when a person lays down. Typically, the mass is approximately one-half to two inches in diameter, according to MayoClinic.com. A mass at the navel should be evaluated by a medical professional to ensure affected people receive prompt and appropriate care. In the absence of treatment, a navel hernia can cause life-threatening medical complications.
