Cymbalta, also known as duloxetine hydrochloride, is a drug used to treat generalized anxiety disorder and depression. It can also be used to treat pain caused by fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy. This drug is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), which increases the amounts of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, improving movement and stopping the transmission of pain signals in the brain.
Minor Side Effects
Some side effects of Cymbalta are considered minor and are usually not harmful, but should be reported to a physician if they are bothersome or persistent. If these side effects persist, it may be necessary to reduce the dose of Cymbalta you are taking or switch to another medication. Do not reduce your dosage or switch medications without consulting a medical professional. Minor side effects of this drug include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, difficulty urinating, headache, drowsiness, uncontrollable shaking, vomiting, heartburn, dry mouth, sweating and night sweats, fatigue, muscle pain and cramps, constipation, stomach pain, increased urination, dizziness, weakness and decrease in sexual desire.
Serious Side Effects
Cymbalta can cause serious side effects that represent a danger to your health. If you notice any of these serious side effects, contact your doctor immediately. Serious side effects of Cymbalta include abdominal swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), confusion, irregular heartbeat, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, peeling skin or blisters, unusual bleeding, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, unusual bruising, dark urine, extreme fatigue, extreme weakness and fever.
Allergic Reaction
Do not take this drug if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. If allergic reaction occurs, seek emergency medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction to Cymbalta include rash, itching, hives, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing and swelling of the lips, eyes, feet, lower legs, hands or ankles.
Overdose
Do not take more of this drug than prescribed by your doctor. Taking too much Cymbalta can cause an overdose that requires immediate medical attention. Signs and symptoms of an overdose include hallucinating, fever, fast heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, seizures, fainting, agitation, loss of coordination and lightheadedness. Loss of consciousness may also occur as the result of an overdose of this drug. If an overdose is suspected, contact a local poison control center or call for emergency medical assistance.
