A pedometer's main function is to count the number of steps you take when walking or running. It does this by sensing your body's motion. Pedometers can also measure how far you've traveled and how long you were traveling. Pedometers are used by everyone from recreational walkers to competitive runners. Using a pedometer makes it easy to record and track the exercise you need to stay healthy.

Function

In order to accurately use a pedometer, the device must be calibrated before it can be used. It is important to calibrate a pedometer to your specific stride, since everyone has a different walking or running stride. All pedometers come with specific instructions on calibration.

Types

There are three different styles of pedometers: forward display, flip-open display and top display. There are also different types of pedometers within these styles. For example, step pedometers count every step you take. Distance pedometers count your steps and the distance traveled. Calorie-burn pedometers measure your steps, distance traveled and calories burned. These require information such as gender, age and weight. A GPS pedometer uses satellite technology to measure your travel distance, speed, calorie burn and altitude. GPS pedometers require basic programming and maintenance.

Identification

There is a magnetic pendulum in each pedometer that swings back and forth as you take steps. This pendulum counts each stride. When a pedometer is calibrated to a specific person, the pendulum's swing is adjusted according to how long or how short his stride is. Every pedometer has a screen that shows the data it has collected.

Benefits

The pedometer's ability to measure your travel distance, steps and calories burned will help you stick to a consistent exercise routine. Health experts have said that walking at least 10,000 strides a day can help reduce body fat, lower your blood pressure and blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of a stroke. A pedometer ensures that you are getting all the exercise you need to stay fit.

Considerations

Nike has created a pedometer that is placed in specially-made shoes. The device connects to your iPod Nano via a wireless sensor, allowing it to function like a pedometer worn on your waist. Once you complete your workout, you can sync the information with a computer and store the data. You can then look back and see how many miles you've run, how many calories you've burned and other useful information.
