The hawthorn tree is a tall, thorny bush common to the Mediterranean region, Europe and northern Africa. It bears tiny white flowers that grow into a berry-like fruit that resembles small pink apples. According to the Health Care Clinic website, hawthorn berry has been used in traditional as well as holistic medicine to treat illness related to the heart and vascular system. Side effects may include dizziness and nausea. Check with your doctor or a qualified health professional before you take hawthorn berry or any other supplemental treatment.

Eases Chest Pain

Patients in a clinical study showed improvement in blood flow when they took 180 mg of a hawthorn berry supplement once a day. With increased blood flow to the heart, these patients found exercise less strenuous, breathing less difficult and edema in the hands and feet lessened. Overall, patients taking hawthorn berry were more comfortable.

Eases Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure

In scientifically produced human trials, Herb Wisdom reports, patients receiving 900 mg a day over the course of two months found the results similar to Captropril, a leading pharmaceutical for congestive heart failure. Patients experienced less shortness of breath and frequency of fatigue.

Eases Symptoms of Heart Disease

The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reports that patients in a clinical trial were given 600 mg a day for eight weeks. The group taking the hawthorn supplement versus the placebo noticed they were able to exercise more comfortably, and experienced a decrease in blood pressure as well as improved heart rate.
