Toprol XL is a medication in a class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by decreasing contractility of the heart and widening the blood vessels in the body. Toprol XL is used in the treatment of angina and hypertension. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. There are some side effects associated with Toprol XL.
Headache, Drowsiness and Fatigue
Some patients taking Toprol XL may develop headache, drowsiness or fatigue. According to Drugs.com, tiredness and dizziness have occurred in about 10 percent of patients. Caution should be used while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until the patient knows how Toprol XL will affect him. Patients who experience headache should consult their physicians regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort. In some cases, drowsiness may be a symptom of low blood pressure. Patients who develop low blood pressure while taking Toprol XL should consult their doctors prior to taking another dose of medication.
Sexual Dysfunction
Toprol XL may cause sexual dysfunction in some users. Symptoms can include decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty achieving an orgasm. These side effects may lessen over time as the body adjusts to Toprol XL. If these side effects become bothersome a doctor should be notified. The physician may recommend a change in medication or dosage or prescribe a medication for the treatment of sexual dysfunction.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Gastrointestinal discomfort may occur in 1 to 5 percent of patients taking Toprol XL, reports Drugs.com. Symptoms may include dry mouth, constipation, heartburn, vomiting or diarrhea. Taking this medication with food may help alleviate such symptoms. Small dietary changes may help to lessen gastrointestinal discomfort. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fiber can help to decrease constipation. Avoiding spicy or fatty foods may help to limit heartburn and diarrhea. Patients who develop diarrhea or vomiting should increase daily intake of fluids to prevent the development of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Severe or persistent gastrointestinal discomfort should be reported to a physician.
