Excessive sweating may cause social embarrassment, and can even make a simple handshake uncomfortable. The body reduces its core temperature by sweating. Sweat glands release moisture that cools the skin's surface. Some people who sweat profusely are diagnosed with hyperhidrosis; about 3 percent of Americans suffer from the condition, according to MedlinePlus. Some medical conditions may also cause increased sweating. Several quick tips may stop sweating and increase comfort levels.

Step 1

Use a fragrance-free antiperspirant. Apply the topical solution to clean, dry skin. Do not get dressed until the solution is dry to avoid stains on clothing. Look for antiperspirants containing aluminum salts, suggests MayoClinic.com. Antiperspirants block sweat glands; using a deodorant only masks odor. Antiperspirants are not just for the underarm area. Apply the solution to feet, palms and even your forehead to reduce excessive sweating.

Step 2

Bathe daily to reduce bacteria and odor. Soaking in a cool bath for about 30 minutes will decrease sweat gland size for about 3 hours, suggests MotherNature.com. Though only a temporary fix, a cool bath may help right before a job interview, public speech or other stressful situation where excessive sweating may become uncomfortable.

Step 3

Place cool compresses or ice packs under arms, in the palms of your hands or other areas where sweat usually forms. Keep them in place for about 5 to 10 minutes. A bag of frozen vegetables or a bag of ice chips also works well. Always use a barrier method between ice and skin to avoid any further injuries.

Step 4

Relax and decrease muscle tension. Close your eyes and focus on breathing to release the anxiety that's causing the increased sweating. Massage your muscles and slowly inhale and exhale. Remove yourself from commotion and sit quietly by yourself. Practice yoga or meditation on a daily basis to reduce stress. For some, a reduction in stress will lead to a reduction of sweating.

Step 5

Remove socks or change socks on a regular basis if sweating is profuse on the feet. Carry an extra pair of socks in your purse or car. Walk without shoes or go barefoot, suggests MayoClinic.com. Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Alternate shoes every other day.

Step 6

Wear clothing and shoes made of natural fibers. Choose loose garments made of cotton, wool or silk, and shoes made of leather, advises MayoClinic.com. Avoid man-made materials such as polyester.

Things You'll Need

  • Fragrance-free antiperspirant
  • Cool compress, ice pack, frozen vegetable or ice chips
  • Clean socks
  • Alternative pair of shoes
