Located less than 10 miles north of Baton Rouge is the small city of Zachary. This affluent suburb is filled with numerous activities designed to keep individuals active and healthy. Around Zachary, you can visit one of the few cycling velodromes in the country, head out fishing or play a round of golf on the local links.
Outdoor Recreation
At Pride Park, individuals in Zachary can find a variety of sports offerings designed to keep them entertained while staying active. Here you will find a tennis court, playground, recreation center, outdoor basketball court, baseball diamond and picnic area. The 10.15-acre facility also hosts adult softball leagues throughout the fall and spring.
Cycling
Maintained by the Baton Rouge Parks and Recreation Department is the BREC Velodrome. This 333-meter Velodrome is located on Perkins Road. The concrete cycling track was constructed in 2010 and is one of only 15 in the United States. Pedaling around the track, cyclists can reach up to 35 mph. The track is open to the public and no experience is required. As of 2010, the specific velodrome bikes are available to rent for $4.
Farm
When looking for a healthy meal in Zachary, consider heading to Port Hudson Organics. Located just outside of the town limits, this farm is open to the public. All produce grown at Port Hudson is done so naturally and organically. Head to this farm to stock up on seasonal fruits, vegetables, preserves, baked goods and specialty items, such as herbs, fresh flowers, honey and breads. The farm is open year-round.
Golf
Head out for a round of golf at Beaver Creek Golf Club, located along Plains Port Hudson Road in Zachary. This 18-hole regulation course has a medium-length layout, perfect for the beginner or advance golfer. The par 72 course was designed by Craig Schreiner in 2002 and features Bermuda grass. This municipal golf course has a driving range.
Fishing
If you are interested in fishing, head to one of the ponds in Zachary that provide ample opportunities to catch some fish. At Flanacher Road Park Lake, there is a one-acre fishing pond. For a great outdoor activity, pack the rods, grab some worms and head out to this park. Also located at Flanacher Road Park are a recreation center, walking paths and picnic area.
