Loratadine, sold under the brand name Claritin, is a medication used to treat allergy symptoms. Other brand names include Claritin 24 Hour Allergy and Tavist ND. Claritin 24 Hour Allergy medications are used to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms, such as itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose and throat irritation. This antihistamine stops the effects of histamine, a chemical released by the body that can result in allergy symptoms. As with any drug, there are a number of possible side effects that can result from taking Claritin 24 Hour Allergy medication.

Complications of Health Conditions

Liver or kidney diseases can be exacerbated by taking Claritin 24 Hour Allergy. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people with medication or food allergies should not take this drug.

Drug Interactions

Claritin might interact with other medications, so always tell your doctor what else you're taking before you begin this drug. You should not use Claritin 24 Hour Allergy if you are on amiodarone, because a serious irregular heartbeat might occur.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions can be severe to Claritin medications. Symptoms can include hives, itching and skin rash. More serious allergic reactions can result in severe swelling on the face--the mouth, tongue or lips. Difficulty breathing, chest pressure and dizziness also can occur.

Side Effects

Most people don't experience any side effects with Claritin, but some people might notice headache and drowsiness. Feeling fatigued and having a dry mouth also can be side effects when using Claritin.
