Making friends can be tricky as you get older. It can be tough to realize that most of your friends have become happily coupled while you're still single or to cope with a sea of coupled friends when you're recovering from a broken relationship. While your friends in couples may be great, if you're single, you may also want a few single friends to hang with. To meet them, plan to step a little bit outside your usual social circles.

Step 1

Invite a single person with whom you're friendly but not "friends"--like your neighbor down the hall or a co-worker--out for lunch or coffee to start a friendship, recommends More Magazine.

Step 2

Check your friends' friends on social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook. If you spot people whose stories about being single match your own experiences, send them a note saying something like, "I was LOL at your baseball game story on Jack's page." Having a friend in common will make it easier to connect.

Step 3

Look for singles get-togethers at your place of worship, your neighborhood pub or even your local wine shop, and make plans to attend.

Step 4

Sign up for a class that encourages student interaction at your local recreation center or community college. Dancing, cooking, theater and foreign language classes can all be good ways to meet people.

Step 5

Join a gym, and take a weekend or after-work class where you'll be likely to run into other single people. It's easy to strike up a conversation before or after your workout.

Step 6

Ask your friends to introduce you to their other single friends, recommends Redbook Magazine. Plan a get-together where every one of your friends has to bring a single pal.
