Cellulite is a substance that appears under the skin in the connective tissues. It is really nothing more than trapped fat cells that take on a lumpy appearance. Although it is not life-threatening, cellulite can take its toll on self-confidence with its "cottage cheese" look. Women are more prone to getting cellulite than men. If you have it and you're looking for a home remedy to remove it, your best shot is treating it like any other fat on your body.
Step 1
Cut back on ill-advised foods. Foods that are highly processed and refined can cause you more weight gain and cellulite can be further promoted. Eliminate deep fried foods, fast food, white flour products and high-fat dairy. Eat high amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, beans, seeds and nuts as they are all nutrient-dense.
Step 2
Reduce your daily caloric consumption. Keep your caloric consumption regulated by eating small meals throughout the day. This can keep you feeling satisfied, give you sustained energy levels and increase your metabolic rate. The end result is weight loss and a reduction in cellulite.
Step 3
Drink water instead of liquid calories. To further promote the loss of fat, eliminate all beverages from your diet that are high in sugar and calories. Examples of these include soda, sweetened teas, processed juices, milk shakes and alcohol. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water daily instead. Water can also help flush toxins from your system and keep you well hydrated.
Step 4
Lift weights. Weight training can help build muscle, which is metabolically active tissue, and it can also cause your skin to be more taut and help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Do exercises that work all of your major muscle groups. Examples are chest presses, shoulder presses, back rows, tricep extensions, bicep curls and squats.
Step 5
Burn calories with cardio. Cardiovascular exercise can burn a significant amount of calories and help reduce your cellulite and weight. Perform cardio for 45 to 60 minutes three times a week on alternating days. Examples are running, biking, elliptical training, rope jumping, swimming, rowing and stair climbing.
Step 6
Exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating can remove dead skin cells and stimulate circulation, which can reduce cellulite. Use a soft bristled body brush while you are taking a shower. Start in the areas of cellulite that are furthest from your heart and work towards it. Go in upward and circular motions.
