If you are in the Boston, Massachusetts area and need a great family or group adventure, try a whale watching tour. The tours give you an opportunity to see one of the largest animals on earth in its natural environment and become educated about these massive mammals.

Type of Whales

During your experience on board, you may see a humpback whale, finback whale, minke whale, and/or white sided dolphin. When viewing these whales, you will be able to tell the differences between each due to some distinct characteristics. For instance, humpback whales have a hump on their back, minkes are smaller dolphin-like baleen whales, and finback whales are slightly smaller than blue whales--45 to 70 feet long--and have a jaw that is white on the right side and black-grey on the left side.

Time of Year

The whales migrate because of climate changes, temperature of water, water depth, food and the structure of the sea floor. For the whales that are in the Atlantic Ocean, they migrate in the spring, summer and autumn to the Boston area for cool waters to feed. During the winter, these animals travel south to warmer waters to give birth. The best time to see a whale in the Boston area is during April through October.
