Nutrition: Carbohydrates Food List

According to MayoClinic.com, carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. Getting 45 percent to 60 percent of daily calories from carbohydrates is recommended for health and staying full between meals, which will prevent overeating and weight gain. Without enough carbohydrates, the body will go into ketosis, characterized by dizziness, nausea and dehydration. Many healthy foods are low in calories, but contribute to carbohydrate intake without causing weight gain.

Pasta

Pasta is a versatile source of carbohydrates that contributes to a balanced diet. It has about 40 grams of carbohydrates per serving, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cooking pasta and serving it with lean meats and vegetables makes a healthy meal that incorporates energy-producing carbohydrates while also providing a reasonable amount of calories and fats. Whole wheat pasta provides carbohydrates in a healthier form than regular pasta by increasing fiber content.

Bread

Bread varies in carbohydrate content depending on the size and type. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a bagel has about 35 grams of carbohydrates, a slice of whole wheat bread has about 14 grams, and a bran muffin has around 24 grams. Bread is the largest portion of the Food Guide Pyramid, with six to 11 servings recommended each day. Choosing the right breads will contribute to a healthy weight and a balanced diet. Whole grains fill up the stomach and keep a person feeling full longer. The fiber in whole grains keeps digestion regular. Bread can be incorporated into any meal.

Fruits and Vegetables

Some types of produce are good sources of carbohydrates. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reports that a potato contains 30 grams of carbohydrates, an apple has 16 grams, dried apricots have 28 grams and a cup of grapes weighs in at 18 grams. Fresh fruits and vegetables make a good snack or side dish, and can be added to soups, sandwiches or salads. MayoClinic.com says the healthiest diet incorporates foods from all the foods groups, including plenty of fruits and vegetables.
