Richmond, Virginia is in the Piedmont region at the highest point of the James River. This means that Richmond is characterized by low, rolling hills between the Tidewater region at sea level and the Blue Ridge Mountains looming above, which makes Richmond an ideal place for hikers of all levels and experience. Several clubs can help hikers take advantage of the many opportunities.
Unique Beauty and History
While hard-core hikers may feel more challenged by the mountainous trails to the far west of Virginia, areas around Richmond are well-known for their beauty and history. With the James River, the Appomattox River and the Chickahominy River all nearby, there is much to enjoy on the many hiking trails near Richmond. Residents and visitors can easily enjoy these trails even during a lunch break.
Trail Head
This group hikes only on dirt trails---no pavement and concrete. It concentrates on moderate and more challenging trails. Trail Head also welcomes mountain bikers, and considers that courtesy is key for both hikers and bikers, since they share the trails. Hike leaders use handheld GPS units to track hikes, and make the information available to members so they know what they have accomplished. The group has after-work, midweek hikes after 6 p.m. during summer, and early (8 a.m.) hikes on weekends.
Canine Adventure
This hiking club is for humans and dogs. The group plans one or two hikes a month. Leaders of Canine Adventure are trained dog handlers, so are available to discuss dog training and behavioral issues. The cost varies, depending on the type of hike. To participate, dogs must be able to handle being around other dogs and people, and must stay on a leash. Each hiker can bring up to two dogs. Hikers must be at least 18. Not all hikes are suitable for puppies under 6 months old or for out-of-shape dogs.
Central Virginia Backpackers
A member-led group, Central Virginia Backpackers focuses on multiday backpacking trips and day hikes. The group plans one or two hikes a month, and has monthly social meetups and occasional educational programs. Members are expected to hold their own by participating in events that match their abilities, but hikers try to challenge fellow members to increase their skills.
