How to Treat Migraine Headaches Without Ibuprofen

Migraines can cause severe headaches and last for a few minutes up to a few days, reports the Mayo Clinic's health education website. Some people may experience a vision change knows as aura that can include blind spots or seeing flashes of light. Or a person may feel tingling in the arms or legs. When a migraine occurs, many people become very sensitive to loud noises and bright lights and sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Drug therapy with ibuprofen is common, but other treatment options are available. Always contact your doctor if your occurrence of migraines increases or if you experience seizures or difficulty speaking.

Step 1

Drink caffeine. Caffeine can constrict the blood vessels and ease the pain associated with a migraine. However, some people may find that drinking caffeine causes migraines, so experiment to find out if caffeine works or doesn't work for you.

Step 2

Lie down. Taking a nap in a dark room with no sound or lights can help relieve pain. Lie down until the migraine passes or until the severe pain passes. A room that is not too hot or too cold will provide the most comfort and help you relax and sleep better.

Apply a warm or cold compress to your head or to the back of your neck. The warm compress can help you relax and ease tension caused by your headache. The cold compress can help constrict blood vessels and alleviate migraine pain.

Step 4

Get a massage. According to the Mayo Clinic, massage can help reduce the frequency of your migraines. Acupuncture can also help reduce the pain caused by migraines. Biofeedback is a relaxation technique that teaches you to relax your body in response to stress. Biofeedback has also been shown to be effective in treating migraines.

Step 5

Keep a headache diary. According to MedlinePlus.com, a headache diary can help you figure out the triggers that cause your migraines. Write down when the migraine occurred and its severity, what you have recently eaten and how much sleep you have had. Write down any other information that may be related to the cause of the migraine such as stress or if a woman is on her period.
