How to Make Your Own Skin Creams & Lotions

Making your own organic body lotion at home requires only a few minutes and a few ingredients. If you have sensitive skin, you can whip up a fragrance-free batch. You can also add essential oils if you prefer a scented lotion. You save money by making your own body lotion, and you can save money at gift-giving season by making extra for friends and family. The variations are endless--for example, you can replace water with herbal tea for toning skin, or with coffee to reduce puffiness. Natural remedies are not supported by clinical research, however.

Step 1

Mix 2 tsp. of stearic acid, 1 tsp. of emulsifying wax and 3/4 cup of olive oil in a plastic bowl. Heat the mixture in the microwave until melted.

Step 2

Heat 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 tsp. of borax in a separate plastic bowl in the microwave until it boils.

Step 3

Remove the boiling water mixture and slowly pour the oil mixture into it while beating with a hand mixer.

Step 4

Add 1 tsp. or two capsules of vitamin E oil and up to six drops of scented essential oils. Mix well with a hand mixer.

Step 5

Pour the mixture through a funnel into small bottles. It will make a total of 12 ounces.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can use another oil of your choice instead of the olive oil if you like. You can also add a few drops of food coloring. Store your homemade lotion in the refrigerator to make it last longer. Do not leave out the vitamin E, which acts as a preservative.
