How to Get Rid of Dry Skin on the Face

Doctors at the National Skin Care Institute say that internal nutrition is as important for maintaining healthy skin as the outside products you use. The skin is the largest organ in the body and reacts to nutrition in much the same way as internal organs. In addition, external environments such as dry indoor air and cold and wind outdoors can create dry skin on the face. There are a number of steps you can take to get rid of dry skin on the face and the rest of your body.

Step 1

Stay hydrated. While it's easy to remember to drink water in the summer when thirst is more obvious, dermatologists at the National Skin Care Institute say that everyone should drink 8 glasses of water every day to get rid of and to prevent dry skin. While the skin stays moisturized from the fluids, the water also flushes toxins from the body that dry skin.

Step 2

Wear sunblock. Sunblock can prevent the drying rays of the sun from penetrating the upper layers of the skin, and can provide protection while dry skin heals.

Step 3

Exfoliate with a gentle brush or washcloth to get rid of dead skin cells that are ready to fall off. Scrubbing off the dead skin allows moisturizers to soak into the skin without the barrier of the dead cells.

Step 4

Use skincare lotion and moisturizers that do not contain dyes or fragrances. They only irritate dry skin and make it worse.

Step 5

Bathe in warm water. Mayo Clinic doctors recommend using warm water instead of hot water to bathe or shower, because hot water dries out skin. They also advise moisturizing your face within three minutes of getting out of the shower or bath to maximize the opening of the skin's pores and to prevent them from closing up and drying before added moisture is applied.

Tips and Warnings

  • To eliminate the chance of irritating your face with allergens and other chemicals, wash your clothes, towels and sheets in fragrance-free detergent. Avoid fabric softener, especially dryer sheets that contain irritating particles.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals to get rid of dry skin on the face. Products such as hair coloring, antibacterial soap and dish soap contain harsh ingredients that can draw out the natural oils in the skin and cause dry skin, while irritating skin on the face that is already dry.
