What To Look For

Most important, look for a pair of pants that is comfortable. When fishing, you'll be spending your days twisting, turning and bending, so a waistband that isn't restrictive will be the most comfortable--such as an elastic waistband. Look for deep front pockets that will keep items secure even when you move around a lot. Cargo pockets on the side with a zip or Velcro closure are also handy. A ring or loop to which you can attach a carabiner or tools will be helpful. Your pants should be made of a lightweight fabric, such as a nylon or nylon blend that is quick to dry. Some pants come with a mesh liner while others have polar fleece liner to keep you warmer if you'll be fishing in cold condtions. A pant with zip-off leg bottoms are perfect for when the day starts off cool but gets hot.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid purchasing fishing pants that are merely water resistant. Water resistant means that the pants will stay dry for a short period of time or if water splatters on them. If you get soaked, water resistant pants won't help. Always look for waterproof pants, as these will keep you dry no matter how wet you get. Avoid purchasing PVC outerwear if you can, particularly for summer fishing. These pants are definitely waterproof but they are nonporous and will be hot. Cotton pants can be comfortable, but if they get wet, they stay wet, making them a less desirable option.

Where To Buy

Fishing pants can be purchased at most sporting goods and outdoor adventure stores. Fishing supply stores such as Bass Pro Shops offer fishing clothing online and in their retail stores. Some stores, such as Tractor Supply Company or Fleet Farm, that carry hunting clothing also carry fishing clothing. Fishing pants are available at many fishing-apparel websites.
