Acute acne breakouts occur quickly, often spurred by hormonal changes. The severity of a breakout varies by person, so you need a treatment that fits your circumstances and protects your health and wellness.

Types

Topical products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, topical retinoids, oral antibiotics and contraceptives may control moderate acne. Severe acute acne usually requires treatment with isotretinoin. Physicians my prescribe light-based technology to boost these treatments.

Effects

Topical products can cause skin irritation and dryness. Antibiotics such as tetracycline and minocycline may cause upset stomach, skin redness and discoloration of the tongue, among other things. Isotretinoin nearly always works; however, users may experience adverse conditions that include nosebleeds, changes in skin color, slow-healing cuts and sores, hair loss or growth, changes in voice and red, cracked lips.

Considerations

You may purchase some topical treatments over the counter. Do not combine the use of these products unless a physician instructs you to. Pregnancy excludes you from treatment with contraceptives, topical retinoids, isotretinoin and laser. Most physicians will not prescribe isotretinoin if you have a history of depression or mood disorders.
