Although Kinesio tape is often used to provide support, stability or rehabilitation to athletes, people also may use it for relief from painful bunions. Individuals with bunions should learn how to appropriately apply this tape to get the most relief from their pain. People with questions or concerns about severe bunion pain should consult a doctor.

Regular Kinesio Tape

Step 1

Wrap a piece of Kinesio tape around the big toe to hold the material in place. Wiggle your toe and check for comfort. Adjust if the tape is too tight or painful.

Step 2

Wrap a piece of Kinesio tape from the middle of the bottom of the foot around the top of the foot. Repeat if desired. Check for comfort and adjust if necessary.

Step 3

Place a piece of Kinesio tape vertically from the big toe to the middle of your foot. Place another piece of Kinesio tape on top of the previously applied tape on your big toe. Instead of bringing the tape down along the foot in a straight line, angle it slightly. Repeat, but angle the next piece of Kinesio tape in the opposite direction. The tape over the bunion area should then resemble a triangle.

Step 4

Wrap another piece of Kinesio tape around the middle of the foot. This piece of tape should go over the edges of the vertical pieces of tape and wrap underneath the foot.

Step 5

Apply a piece of Kinesio tape around the big toe. Use this tape to cover the edges of the pieces of tape you applied vertically. Repeat if desired.

Kinesio Bunion Tape

Step 1

Apply the wide edge of the tape on top of the inner foot, directly above the bunion.

Step 2

Wrap the rest of the attached pieces of tape underneath the foot and up the top of the outer side of the foot. Secure the first and second pieces directly across from the other edge of the tape on the top of the foot. Secure the third piece further back, closer to the ankle of the foot. Keep the area of the bunion itself uncovered.

Step 3

Check for comfort. Adjust if necessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are having difficulty properly wrapping your foot using Kinesio tape, ask a doctor for a demonstration or additional treatment options.
  • Do not wrap the tape too tightly, as this may interfere with blood circulation to the foot.
