Compression wraps are used to control swelling and relieve pain and pressure at the site of an injury or wound. They are commonly used in the treatment of sprained wrists or ankles are available at most drug stores and pharmacies. The wraps should be used during the daytime and applied upon waking to prevent the collection of fluid at the site of injury while sitting or standing.
Step 1
Clean and dry the area to be wrapped, and change any wound dressings that need to be changed.
Step 2
Start wrapping the bandage at one end of the injury site, overlapping each wrap so that no skin is showing. If you are wrapping an ankle, begin around the sole of the foot and wrap up over the ankle to the calf.
Step 3
Wrap the compression bandage snugly so that there are no gaps or wrinkles. If you have excess bandage, wrap over the area that you have already wrapped. If you need to use a second bandage to cover more area, overlap the first bandage by 6 inches.
Step 4
Clip the end in place when you are finished wrapping.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have pain, numbness or tingling, loosen the wraps.
