Acne can be caused by many things. Hormones, stress and even genetics may be to blame for your breakouts, says the American Academy of Dermatology. However, if your pimples get too large and too inflamed or if you pick or squeeze at them, they may leave scars behind. While this may be a serious blow to your self-esteem, you can rest assured that there are ways to get rid of pimple scars on the face. Just be warned, they will not go away overnight.
Step 1
Visit your dermatologist's office to have any remaining pimples you may have treated. There would be no point in treating pimple scars if you're just going to get more scars in the future. Expect to be prescribed a strong topical treatment or an oral medication such as oral contraceptives, antibiotics or even Accutane, which shrinks the skin's oil glands. It may take several months, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, to fully get your acne under control.
Step 2
Undergo a chemical peel, either at home or in your dermatologist's office. If doing this at home, purchase a glycolic acid peel. After washing the face, apply the peel to the scarred area, being careful to avoid the eyes, nose and lips. After sitting for several minutes, wash off the peel. Stronger peels may be performed by your dermatologist. According to MayoClinic.com, a peel will remove dead skin cells, softening the appearance of your pimple scars.
Step 3
Undergo dermabrasion. After going to your dermatologist's office, your skin will be numbed, then a sanding device is run over the scarred area. This physically removes the top layers of skin, encouraging new tissue growth. It will take several weeks to heal, but you should notice a smoother skin texture with fewer noticeable scars by the time the skin is fully healed
Step 4
Make an appointment with your dermatologist to undergo laser resurfacing. Your skin will be numbed then a laser is used to burn the top layer of skin. This stimulates new tissue growth, and in time, your pimple scars will fade away or at the very least become less noticeable. Unfortunately, several treatments are usually needed to fully get rid of scars.
Step 5
Request to have your pimple scars surgically removed. After your skin is numbed, your dermatologist will cut out the pimple scar and stitch the surrounding tissue together. Your skin may be swollen for several weeks following this procedure.
