Indianapolis is known as the Crossroads of America and that is good news for travelers with RVs. Major interstates from seven different directions intersect here, making it easy to drive into Indianapolis or to leave by the most direct route. Also, thanks to Interstate 465 that circles the city, the area is one of the most RV-driver friendly areas in the country.
North
If you are heading into the city from the north you may want to check out the Indianapolis KOA off of Interstate 70. It has 170 year-round RV sites available. Most have full-service hookups with water, sewer and electricity. There are also coin operated washers/dryers. Not far away is one of the state's newest parks, Fort Benjamin Harrison. It was a vital part of the country's defense until it was decommissioned in 1991. You can visit the Fort's preserved WW II prisoner of war camp or ride horses available for rent at the stables.
Central
In the heart of the city is the RV campground at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on East 38th Street. The campground has pull-through sites large enough for big rigs. Pets are allowed. There are also indoor showers, dumping stations and full-service hookups. Although the state fair is held in August, there are still other events at the fairgrounds almost year-round. Less than 5 miles away is downtown Indianapolis, with its shopping and restaurants.
West
If you are a racing fan looking for a place to park your RV, you might want to head west to the Raceview Family Campground on U.S. 136. It is just feet from an entrance to O'Reilly Raceway, home of the National Hot Rod Association's nationals. The campground has 200 sites that go quickly during racing events, both at O'Reilly and at the Indy 500 track in nearby Speedway. During race weekends, food, ice and firewood are sold. Wi-Fi service is available.
South
The Indy Lakes Resort on West Southport Road has all the "home away from home" services an RV camper could want. It has a stocked fishing lake, along with full-service hookups, high-speed Internet access and satellite TV service. Also nearby is the Lake Haven Retreat on the south side of Interstate 465. This retreat also has cable TV and Internet service, plus it has paddle boats for rent on its 5-acre lake.
Cost
As of 2010, expect to pay at least $25 a day for full-service sites with electricity, sewer and water. These types of sites also cost around $145 per week or $350 per month. Rates might be higher on holidays or race weekends. Also expect to pay more for other services such as Internet access or cable TV.
