If you walk out of the grocery store on a regular basis wondering where all your money went, you're not the only one. Keeping your grocery bill in check every month can be a hard task, especially when you're trying to feed multiple people in the family. But there are some things you can do to make sure your next trip to the supermarket doesn't break the bank.

Combine Coupons With Store Sales

Almost everyone knows the benefits of clipping coupons, but if you really want to save money on your grocery trips, combine those coupons with store sales to save even more money. Picking up a grocery store's circular ads can help you scan the best prices on the items you use most. If you wait to use your coupons until those items go on sale, you'll be getting a double discount.

Avoid Prepared Food

It may take a little extra time in the kitchen, but cutting out the prepared meals you buy could help save you money at the supermarket, according to Bankrate.com. Food manufacturers build the cost of making prepared food items into the price, meaning you're paying for someone else to make that dish of lasagna rather than you doing it from scratch. Set aside time during the week to prepare food in bulk, then freeze it rather than buying prepared food.

Pay Attention at the Register

The checker at the grocery counter might be working too fast, causing him to enter some items--especially items with codes, such as produce--incorrectly, causing your bill to be higher than it should, according to "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Watch the items as they ring up and don't be afraid to speak up if something doesn't register as it was shown on the shelf.

Stock Up on Non-Perishables

Buying in bulk is one of the best ways to save money at the grocery store, but only if you buy when the price is right. Stock up on foods you eat on a regular basis that can store for months at a time if you get to the store and find out they're on sale.

Be Flexible With Brands

More often than not, the generic version of your favorite cereal, coffee or spaghetti sauce tastes similar, if not the same, to the name-brand version. Many over-the-counter medications like cough syrup and pain relievers contain exactly the same ingredients, meaning you're paying for the label. Branch out and try new brands that will save you money, and you'll eventually get used to the different flavors and ingredients.
