Things to Do in the Columbus, Georgia Area

Historic Columbus is the third largest city in Georgia and is located approximately 100 miles south of Atlanta, on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The river and the various nearby state parks allow visitors to Columbus to enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreational activities.

Hiking

Visitors to Columbus who want to do some hiking will find that there are numerous nearby trails Standing Boy Creek State Park is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and provides visitors with multiple hiking trails. The nearby Franklin D. Roosevelt State Parks are Georgia's largest park system and has 42 miles trails. Cooper Creek Park also has a hiking/walking trail.

Horseback Riding

Franklin D. Roosevelt State Parks also provide visitors with a place to enjoy some horseback riding. The F. D. R. State Parks have a total of 28 miles of trails that are specifically designated for horseback riding. Other horse facilities at the park include stables and those visitors who don't have their own horses can rent one while there.

Camping

Something else that visitors to Columbus can do is go camping. There are numerous privately owned and operated campgrounds in the Columbus area, as well as various public campgrounds that are located in nearby parks. Some of these public campgrounds can be found in the Spring Valley Camping and Recreation Area, Franklin D. Roosevelt State Parks, Cooper Creek Park and Standing Boy Creek State Park.

Fishing

Fishing is yet another activity that can be enjoyed in the area of Columbus. Cooper Creek Park is home to the Cooper Creek Reservoir, which is known for its trout fishing. Visitors can also fish in Franklin D. Roosevelt State Parks two lakes, Lake Delanor and Lake Franklin, as well as on the Chattahoochee River, which runs right along the edge of Columbus.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Visitors can also enjoy some canoeing or kayaking on Franklin D. Roosevelt State Parks two lakes. The visitors who prefer a little more excitement on the water can go whitewater canoeing or kayaking right on the Chattahoochee River. Visitors without their own canoes and kayaks will find that there are various rental facilities located nearby.
