Increasing your shooting ability can make you a much more valuable player on your basketball team. Shooting the ball is about balance, hand-eye coordination, jumping ability and a smooth release of the ball. Once shooters learn the right form, they can practice these skills on their own or with teammates. While many aspects are important in playing winning team basketball, the most important may be shooting the basketball with accuracy.

Step 1

Spread your feet shoulder-width apart before shooting the ball. To shoot the ball accurately, you need a strong base. By flexing your knees and taking a moderately wide stance, you have a chance to jump consistently each time you shoot the ball.

Step 2

Jump with power and control when you want to go up for your shot. Getting up and over the defender will give you a better shot of making your shot. However, if your goal is simply to explode over the defender, you will lose body control, and that will make it difficult to shoot accurately.

Step 3

Hold the basketball with a consistent grip when shooting. Spread the fingers on your shooting hand fully, and use your other hand as a guide to get the basketball in the proper shooting position. Before releasing the ball, bring it to head height.

Step 4

Concentrate on the front of the rim when you prepare to shoot. To become consistent, aim for a spot slightly above the front rim every time. According to former Nevada-Las Vegas and Fresno State head basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, the biggest reason for inconsistent shooting is a failure to concentrate fully on each shot taken. "Basketball shooters in particular need to concentrate as fully as possible at the end of whatever movement frees them for a shot, since all the basketball moves designed to break them free from their defender for an open basketball shot are useless if they cannot make the shot," Tarkanian said.

Step 5

Shoot with proper finger and wrist control to develop accuracy. Snap your wrist forward, and allow the ball to roll off your fingertips smoothly and precisely. Point your middle finger straight at the front rim when you finish your shot.
