What To Look For
Garmin Forerunner running watches provide a wealth of information for beginner or experienced runners. Choosing the right one begins with understanding the features and determining what you need for your workout.
The four main models are Forerunner 110, Forerunner 305, Forerunner 310XT, and Forerunner 405. Each model is GPS-enabled, links with the Garmin Connect online community and Garmin Training Center software, contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and records lap history.
Forerunner models 305, 310XT and 405 allow you to program way points and courses, record bike speed and cadence, and use the Virtual Partner for training; and they have a customizable display. Additional run-related functions of the 305, 310XT and 405 include advanced workout and interval training features that allow you to create specific goals for each workout. These models are also compatible with the foot pod accessory.
Forerunner 405 and 310XT auto-sync to your computer, eliminating the need for a USB connection. Forerunner 110 and 310XT provide heart rate-based caloric computations if you are using a heart rate monitor.
Common Pitfalls
A heart rate monitor is optional with Forerunners, and is only included in the base price of the Forerunner 305; other models require purchasing a bundle at a greater cost to receive the heart rate monitor chest strap.
If you plan to use Garmin Connect and Garmin Training Center, you'll need a PC with Windows XP or newer, or a Mac running OS 10.4 or later with Safari.
Where To Buy
The complete line of Garmin Forerunners and accessories are available from the Garmin website. REI is an authorized Garmin dealer and sells Forerunner units in-store and online; however, most stores carry a limited variety of products and accessories. Online retailer Amazon sells most Forerunner models and has the lowest price on certain models and offers free shipping on purchases over $25.
Cost
As of September 2010, the Forerunner 305 retails between $152.00 and $324.60, depending on accessories included. The Forerunner 405 costs between $229.95 and $349.99. Garmin's Forerunner 310XT sells between $349.99 and $399.99. And the newest model, Forerunner 110 starts at $199.99 for the watch only and tops out at $249.99 for the bundle package containing a heart rate monitor.
