The health benefits of taking supplemental digestive enzymes are most often seen in those individuals with an insufficiently functioning pancreas. The University of Michigan Health System suggests that many physicians are prescribing them for other conditions ranging from cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, Crohn's disease and even indigestion. Certain medications may be contraindication combined with the use of digestive enzymes, so it is imperative to discuss all options with a licensed health professional before attempting to self-medicate.

Amylase

Amylase is a digestive enzyme that helps the body to digest carbohydrates. According to MedlinePlus, certain medical conditions may warrant supplementation in order to function properly. Amylase supplementation is generally prescribed in conditions of chronic pancreatitis, diabetic ketoacidosis, pancreatic pseudocysts, other damages to the pancreas, pancreatic cancer, kidney disease/failure and toxemia during pregnancy.

Lipase

Lipase is a digestive enzyme used to digest fat in the body. MedlinePlus describes a condition known as "lipoprotein lipase deficiency" that requires lipase digestive enzymes to decrease fat in the blood. This condition is typically seen in infants and small children with failure to thrive diagnosis. In addition, clinical trials and diet pills currently being marketed to the public often include lipase to decrease the amount of fat in the body of obese individuals. However, there is insufficient evidence to prove or disprove validity of its use for this purpose.

Protease

Protease is a digestive enzyme that assists the body in processing proteins. Proteins, according to Greenwood Health Systems, can be difficult to digest and create build up in the gastrointestinal track. This may exasperate autoimmune disorders and inflammatory conditions, create an environment for cancers, bacterium and parasites to flourish and leave an individual feeling ill. Protease supplements may also be used for internal cleansing purposes for general overall health benefits.
