Licorice, or Glycyrrhiza glabra, has been used as a herbal remedy in both Western and Eastern medicine for thousands of years, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Licorice is used as a remedy for a variety of health conditions, but its effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for all of them. Talk to your physician before using licorice tea as a herbal remedy.
Canker Sores
Gargling four times per day with licorice tea may help to alleviate pain associated with canker sores, according to one small study reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Menopause
Although no scientific studies have been performed, licorice root tea is often used to treat symptoms of menopause, including mood swings, hot flashes, irregular bleeding, water retention, vaginal dryness, breast tenderness and PMS, according to Catherine Zuver, R.N., of the University of Virginia Health System. Licorice root tea may also help to maintain energy levels.
Coughs and Colds
Licorice root tea may be an effective treatment for colds, and may act as an expectorant, loosening chest congestion, notes the University of Michigan Health System. Licorice root is also used to treat upper respiratory infections, and although the herb has been studied, results have been mixed.
