What To Look For

When shopping for a drugstore shampoo, it is best to look for a formula that matches your specific hair type and needs. For example, if you have dandruff or a noticeably itchy scalp, a drugstore brand such as Head and Shoulders will be a better choice than a high-shine product. Search the ingredient list for specific formulas that will add to the health of your hair. Ingredients such as ammonium lauryl sulfate may be hard on fragile, dry or damaged hair.

Common Pitfalls

According to Salon Web, many people choose a shampoo based on the fragrance and foaming qualities. Although these aspects may appear to add a sense of luxury to the product, in reality they do not contribute to the shampoo's quality or ability to thoroughly cleanse the hair. Additionally, some products may make outrageous claims about what the shampoo can do for your hair. Products that claim to drastically alter the texture, shine or thickness of the hair rarely work as stated and may prove to be a disappointment.

Where To Buy

The primary places to buy drugstore shampoos are local and national drugstores. National drugstore chains may have more competitive prices because they can buy shampoo and other beauty products in bulk. These stores, such as Walgreens, have a variety of shampoo brands available across the country. Other options include superstores such as Target and Walmart and online drugstores. Online drugstores offer the advantage of shopping at home, special offers and occasionally drastic price reductions.

Cost

Drugstore shampoos can range in price from less than a dollar to $20 and more. VO5-brand shampoos are sold at most major drugstores and include a variety of formulas and scents. As of September 2010, this brand retails at Walgreens for approximately $ .79 for 15 oz. On the other end of the price spectrum, Pureology's Superstraight Shampoo, also sold at Walgreens, costs $28.99 for a 10.1-oz bottle.
