Subway is an internationally-franchised sandwich shop featuring submarine-style sandwiches and assorted side orders, such as chips, sodas and cookies. Sandwiches are made-to-order and patrons can choose from two sandwich sizes and a wide variety of condiments and types of bread. While Subway publishes standard nutritional information for all of its products, calorie counts and other nutritional information can vary slightly from sandwich to sandwich.
Subway Tuna Sandwich
The Subway tuna fish sandwich is a tuna salad-style sandwich, as the tuna is mixed with mayonnaise. The sandwich is listed on Subway menu boards under the main sandwich category, as the addition of mayonnaise precludes it from being listed as having 6 grams of fat or less, another popular menu category.
Sandwich Nutrition Information
Subway offers two sandwich sizes, 6-inch and 12-inch. To compute standard nutritional information, Subway assumes a sandwich is 6 inches long and is made with 9-grain wheat bread, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cucumbers and cheese. This "standard" version of the Subway tuna sandwich carries 530 calories, along with 30 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, 0.5 grams of trans fat, 21 grams of protein, 45 grams of cholesterol, 930 grams of sodium and 5 grams of fiber. Vitamins and minerals in the sandwich amount to 10 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin A, 20 percent of the RDV of vitamin C, 10 percent of the RDV of calcium, and 20 percent of the RDV of iron. The 12-inch version of the sandwich carries double the amount of all categories.
Bread Type
Available types of bread at Subway include 9-grain wheat bread, Italian--white--bread, Monterey cheddar, hearty Italian, roasted garlic, Italian herbs and cheese, honey oat, parmesan oregano and flatbread. For 6-inch sandwiches, calorie counts range from 200 to 260. Breads carry few or no vitamins and minerals, except for 15 percent of the RDV of iron. Fat counts range from 2 grams to 5 grams.
Condiments and Other Toppings
Condiments and other toppings at a Subway sandwich shop range in calories from 5 to 110. Most condiments carry little by way of fat or cholesterol, except for animal products such as bacon, mayonnaise and ranch dressing, which have from 3 1/2 to 12 grams of fat and about 10 grams of cholesterol.
Although condiments may vary slightly from shop to shop, the standard selection of Subway toppings consists of olives, lettuce, tomatoes, yellow (banana) peppers, salt, pepper, honey mustard sauce, light mayonnaise, whole mayonnaise, chipotle southwest sauce, yellow mustard, pepperoni, olive oil blend, ranch dressing, red wine vinaigrette, sweet onion sauce and vinegar.
Other Countries
While calorie counts are typically quite standard for U.S. Subway shops, nutritional information may vary among international stores. For example, at New Zealand Subway shops, although the serving size is only 236 grams instead of the U.S.-standard 245 grams, the calorie count drops from 530 to 383 for a 6-inch tuna sandwich.
