Depression Help

Everyone deals with depression at some point in their lives. When it comes and goes for a short amount of time, there is no reason to be alarmed. But for some people, it can become chronic and disrupt every aspect of their lives. In the worst of situations, thoughts of death and suicide can arise. Depression can be caused by a number of things such as money problems, going through a divorce, losing a loved one or it can even be genetic. Help for depression involves conventional and natural treatments.

Step 1

Make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor will do some evaluations on you and run some tests to rule out any other conditions that might be to blame for your depression such as a thyroid disorder or a virus. He will also probe for any family history of depression and symptoms that might be present.

Step 2

Get an antidepressant medication. After you have gone through the evaluation process, your doctor can prescribe you an antidepressant medication to naturally balance out neurotransmitters in the brain. Examples of these include citalopram, fluoxetine, duloxetine, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Step 3

Seek psychotherapy. Psychotherapy can be done in a group setting or one-on-one with a professional mental health counselor. Cognitive therapy is a type of this where you can talk about your depression and find coping strategies to replace negative behaviors and beliefs with positive beliefs and actions.

Step 4

Avoid mind altering substances. Drugs and alcohol can have a direct impact on your emotional and mental frame of mind. If you want to reduce your depression, stay away from them.

Step 5

Increase your activity levels. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise and physical activity have been shown to reduce symptoms of depression. Perform some form of daily exercise or activity you like such as running, walking, swimming, weight training, gardening or playing racquetball. Physical activity can also take your mind off of what is causing you to be depressed.

Step 6

Make a mind and body connection. Relaxation activities can be utilized to lower your stress levels, keep you more calm and keep your mind distracted. Partake in relaxation techniques like yoga, guided imagery, muscle relaxation, tai-chi and meditative breathing.
