The Commit Lozenge is a stop-smoking aid that is now called the Nicorette Lozenge and is made by the pharmaceutical company GalaxoSmithKline. Though it is packaged differently, it is made by the same formula, according to Nicorette.com. The Federal Drug Administration has approved this lozenge for over-the-counter sale. The nicotine is absorbed into the body as it slowly dissolves in the mouth and helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. However, there are some side effects that come with using this stop-smoking aid.
Digestive Problems
MedlinePlus reports that using nicotine-replacement therapy such as the Commit Lozenge may cause digestive problems. Nausea is one common side effect. Drugs.com adds that Commit may also cause dry mouth, heartburn, indigestion, and/or diarrhea.
Nervous System
Disruption of the nervous system is another relatively common side effect, according to Drugs.com. These problems often manifest as problems falling or staying asleep and weird dreams; dizziness and lightheadedness; and headache. MedlinePlus notes that the sleeplessness often only occurs during the first few days of using nicotine-replacement therapy but goes away after the body adjusts to the new route of ingested nicotine.
Cardiovascular System
Using Commit lozenges as nicotine-replacement therapy may also affect the heart and blood vessels, collectively called the cardiovascular system. Drugs.com reports that the lozenge may increase a person's heart rate and blood pressure. It has also been known to cause heart arrhythmia, which is characterized by an irregularly beating heart. For people who already have coronary artery disease, Drugs.com indicates that using the Commit Lozenge may make this disease worse.
Oral Effects
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center notes that, because the nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, Commit Lozenges may also cause a warm and tingling sensation as the nicotine is absorbed. This side effect is normal, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering advises that consulting a medical professional is only necessary if these problems persist.
