How to Remove Dark Spots

The dark spots on your skin pop up on your skin when you expose your skin to the sunlight for a long time. The dark spots are called age spots and they appear when your body increases the amount of melanin it produces. Melanin is the chemical that makes your skin appear darker, and it increases the more time you spend in the sun. Sunlight kills the elastin and collagen in your skin, the chemicals that keep your skin healthy. You can clear the dark spots on your skin my taking the right medicine, using natural ingredients and scrubbing your skin.

Step 1

Apply lemon juice to the dark spots on your skin. Lemon juice contains an ingredient that over time, can naturally bleach your skin and clear up the dark spots. Pour a half cup of lemon juice squeezed from a real lemon or poured from a bottle of lemon juice into a bowl. Dip a cotton ball into the juice, then rub on your dark spots. Let the juice evaporate into your skin.

Step 2

Scrub your skin in the shower. Use a sponge called a loofah to get rid of your dead skin. Buy a loofah that has hard fibers so you can rub off the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. Those dead skin cells contain the most amount of melanin, the chemical that makes your skin darker. By consistently removing the dead skin cells on your body, you can gradually clear the dark spots on your skin.

Step 3

Stay out of the sunlight. The main cause of dark spots on your skin is from sun exposure, so if you want to clear those spots it is essential to stay out of the sunlight. It is impossible to do this all the time, so when you have to be in the sun, cover up your skin. Wear long pants, long sleeves and a hat. Also, apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Step 4

Apply an over-the-counter medicine on your dark spots. You can buy creams at your pharmacy that can help clear the dark spots on your skin without a visit to the doctor. MayoClinic.com recommends a cream that has the ingredients bleach, steroids or retinoids. If none of those creams are effective, your doctor can prescribe a medication that is stronger.

Step 5

Apply buttermilk to the dark spots on your skin. Similar to lemon juice, buttermilk can naturally bleach your skin and clear up your dark spots. Pour about a 1/2 cup of buttermilk into a bowl and soak a cotton ball in the liquid. Rub onto your age spots and let the liquid evaporate.
