Treating Erectile Problems

Erectile dysfunction is also called "impotence." This a condition where a man is not able to maintain an erection long enough to complete a sexual experience. It is not uncommon for every man to go through this once in a while, but when it happens at least 25 percent of the time, it can cause problems with self confidence and it can also be a sign of a more serious condition. Erectile problems can be treated by following several key steps.

Step 1

See your doctor about an oral prescription. Before getting an oral prescription, your doctor will run a series of tests. He will ask questions about your symptoms, other medications you are taking and if other physical changes are present. Blood tests can also be done if your doctor suspects you may have an underlying condition. Once the diagnosis has been made, your doctor can prescribe sildenafil, vardenafil or tadalafil. These medications help promote blood flow, aiding in gaining and maintaining an erection.

Step 2

Inject yourself. Prostaglandin E is a hormone that increases blood flow and promotes erections by relaxing muscles in the penis. Alprostadil is a synthetic version of this hormone that you can inject into the base or side of your penis with a fine tipped needle. Within 5 to 20 minutes, you can have an erection. Another method called "self-administered intraurethral therapy" can do the same thing. With this treatment, a small alprostadil suppository is inserted into the tip of the penis by way of a disposable applicator. The suppository is smaller than a grain of rice and it gets placed about two inches into the urethra. Erectile tissue absorbs the suppository, blood flow is increased and an erection is formed.

Step 3

Get hormone replacement. As with prescription medications, your doctor can run blood tests to check your hormone levels. Testosterone is a dominant male hormone that is responsible for muscle strength, energy levels and sexual function. In the event your erectile problems are stemming from low testosterone, your doctor can prescribe hormone replacement therapy.

Step 4

Use a penis pump. This is hollow tube that gets placed around the penis. Air is sucked out by a battery operated pump which creates a vacuum. This causes blood to travel into the penis and make it erect. You remove the tube and then place a tension ring on the bottom of the penis, leaving it there during sex to keep the blood from flowing back out.

Step 5

Get vascular surgery. In the event you have suffered an injury to your pelvic area or you have vascular blockages, talk to your doctor about getting surgery. This can be done to unclog blockages and promote erections.

Step 6

Do relaxation activities. Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, stress and guilt can sometimes lead to erectile problems. Participate in mind and body activities to become more calm and at ease. Examples of these are yoga, tai-chi, meditative breathing, muscle relaxation and guided imagery.
