It is important to follow careful steps when putting contact lenses in your eyes. If you do not, you run the risk of contaminating the contact lens, damaging your eyes or losing the contact lens. The steps are not difficult, but they require attention to detail.
Step 1
Select an appropriate place to put contacts in your eyes. This should ideally be a well-lit place with a mirror. If there is a sink in front of you, make sure that the drain is closed so if you drop a contact lens, it won't go down the drain. Keep the area clear of clutter so that it is easy to find a contact lens if you drop one.
Step 2
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water. This is an important step. There is dirt and bacteria on your hands, even if they look clean. You should always wash your hands immediately before putting contacts in your eyes. Remember to close the drain after you finish washing your hands.
Step 3
Place a contact lens on your finger and look at it. The contact lens should curve upward like a bowl. If the edges of the contact lens point slightly outward, the contact is upside down. Turn it over and check to see that it is curving the right way. It is important for the contact lens to face the right way. An upside down contact lens will irritate your eye.
Step 4
Spray a stream of multipurpose solution on the contact lens. Do this for at least 5 seconds per side. This will clean and hydrate the contact lens. Make sure that the correct side is facing up when you finish. Place two or three drops of multipurpose solution in the concave part of the contact lens so that it is pooling inside.
Step 5
Open your eye up wide and move close to the mirror. Look right into your eyeball. Pull your bottom eyelid down with your spare hand to help keep your eye open.
Step 6
Gently place the contact lens directly on your wide-open eye. As soon as you feel the contact touch your eye, pull your finger away. The contact lens should stick to your eyeball. If it is still on your finger, wet it again with multipurpose solution and try again.
Step 7
Blink several times to adjust the contact lens in your eye. This should happen automatically. If your eyes feel dry, add a few drops. If you experience irritation or pain, remove the contact lens and start over.
