Swimming lessons can save lives. People drown every year because they never learned how to swim. One reason swim lessons are overlooked is simply because city dwellers don't know where to find them. The Nashville, Tennessee, area offers an array of swimming class options for its citizens from all walks of life and levels of swim knowledge. Whether you're an expert seeking lifeguard certification or a beginner trying to grasp the basics, you'll find a class for your level.

Government-Operated Swimming Classes

The Nashville Aquatic Club is a government-operated swim club that teaches swimming and water safety classes. The Swim America Program teaches swimming basics to children and adults older than 3 years. The Aquatic Club also instructs people interested in water safety occupations such as life guards and water safety instructors. The club even offers the Guard Start program on those topics for children.

Private One-on-One Lessons

The prestigious Vanderbilt University offers private lessons to non-student citizens of Nashville. When you pay, you're getting four private 40-minute one-on-one sessions with a swim instructor, but you may need to schedule additional lessons to fully master all the skills. In an effort to accommodate busy schedules, several class times are available. All the swim classes are held in the Student Recreation Center on the Vanderbilt campus.

Children's Lessons

The Sweetman family, owners of Brendan Sweetman Swimmers, offers children's swim instruction, specializing in getting children over their fears of the water and teaching the skills that could save their lives. The curriculum is based on personal factors unique to each child, so the instructors won't automatically stick children in a swim class based on age. Rather, a child's experience and pace will determine what they're to learn.

Budget Swim Lessons

The YMCA provides low-cost swim lessons to people who may not otherwise afford them. Several YMCA branches in and around Nashville offer swim instruction for ages 6 months and up. Classes include parent and child classes in which parents will introduce their toddlers to the pool and the idea of being in the water; preschool classes that allow children their first swimming experience without the assistance of parents; youth and teenage lessons that allow children and teens to continue building their skills; junior competitor classes for advanced swimmers interested in the world of competitive swimming; and adult classes, young adult to senior citizens, to work on swimming skills.

Scuba Swimming Lessons

Nashville residents who are interested in scuba diving but put the idea on hold because of the lack of ocean in middle Tennessee may check out Bluewater Scuba. This is not the swim class for beginners, but for those already decent swimmers who would like to further their swim experience in the scuba world.

The first training sessions begin with home study of a student kit, DVD and manual before answering questions. It takes most people 10 to 12 hours to complete home study, but once that's finished, you're ready to move on to water lessons. Other than the basic scuba class, Bluewater Scuba offers advanced and specialty classes for those interested in a career in scuba.
