Methods to Induce Natural Labor

Women who want to have a natural labor may want to find ways to help labor along. There are ways that can do just that; however, these methods should only be done under the supervision of your practitioner. Women with underlying health conditions or those with high-risk pregnancies may not be able to use any of the natural labor induction methods available.

Prostaglandin

Sperm contains prostaglandins, which help to ripen or soften the cervix. As the cervix softens, dilation is possible. Having intercourse as you near your due date enables the prostaglandins in your mate's sperm to work on the cervix. Additionally, if you're able to orgasm, your body will release oxytocin, which stimulates contractions. Another source of prostaglandins is evening primrose oil. With your practitioner's permission, you can begin taking this supplement orally at 37 weeks. It can also be inserted vaginally to help ripen the cervix.

Nipple Stimulation

Stimulating the nipples causes the body to release oxytocin, which may produce contractions. The method you use for this type of induction varies. Some women use 20 minutes of continual stimulation per nipple each hour until contractions are three minutes apart. Other women use this method until the start of each contraction and then begin again after the contraction subsides. It's important that you only use this method if you have reached your due date, as contractions produced using this method are thought to be stronger and more productive than regular contractions.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Two places on your body have pressure points that may help labor along. One of these is the webbing between your forefinger and thumb. The other is four fingers above the ankle bone. Either of these sites can be massaged in a circular motion. An acupuncturist can also use these two places to aid labor. Be warned: These areas will be extremely sore when you massage them; however, that's how you know you've hit the right spot.

Walking

Walking is a method of labor induction that's effective once labor has begun. The gravitational pull on the baby helps it to put light pressure on the cervix. This helps the cervix to ripen. If you're in labor and want to walk, be sure that you have someone to help support you during contractions.

Stripping the Membranes

Stripping the membranes is a method of natural labor induction that must be performed by your practitioner. Your cervix must be dilated enough for your practitioner to insert a finger into your cervix and gently separate the membranes from the cervix. Some practitioners call this method massaging the membranes or sweeping the membranes. If you and your practitioner decide to try this method of induction, be prepared for some pain and discomfort during the process. In some cases, this procedure may have to be repeated to be effective.
