Breakfast is often a meal rich in refined carbohydrates, such as cereals, pancakes, toast and muffins. This is not a good way to start the day if you are following any type of low-carbohydrate diet plan. Low-carb diets basically switch foods that are high in carbohydrates with foods that are low in carbohydrates, to help balance blood sugar and lose weight. Giving up your high-carb breakfast items can be challenging, but many low-carb breakfast options are available.
Eggs
Eggs are a good source of protein and a traditional breakfast food. You can eat eggs scrambled, over-easy, poached, boiled, or any other way you like. Making an omelet with cheese, or fresh vegetables is a healthy, low-carb option, as is a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, onions, peppers, cheese and hot sauce, wrapped in a whole grain tortilla.
Breakfast Meat
Traditional breakfast meats like bacon, sausage, Canadian bacon and ham are part of most low-carb eating plans. Monitor your fat intake if you include these meats in your breakfast with any regularity.
Berries and Yogurt
Berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries, are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber. Adding them to yogurt can give you a nutritious start to your day. Choose yogurt that is unsweetened to keep carbohydrate levels in check.
Cottage Cheese
Cottage cheese is a high-protein, high-calcium food that is good for breakfast in a hurry. Adding berries or cantaloupe to cottage cheese will give it a flavor boost without too many carbs. Avoid adding overly sweet fruits or dried fruits, which will raise the sugar level too much.
Smoothies
Smoothies are great if you are in a hurry, and can be made into a low-carb breakfast with the addition of protein. Add some whey or soy protein powder to a blender, then toss in frozen berries, skim milk and unsweetened yogurt and blend it all together. Natural peanut butter can be added for a different flavor.
Leftovers
Nobody said your low-carb breakfast has to be created on the spot. If you have leftovers from a low-carb dinner the night before, and you are OK eating them for breakfast, heat them up and enjoy.
