There are numerous reasons to have your child's IQ tested, though there is disagreement over what IQ scores define. A well-documented 1982 article, "Assessments of Children's Intelligences and Special Abilities" by J. Sattler, cited a study in which 99 school psychologists independently scored an IQ test and evaluated the person's IQ from 73 to 117. Nonetheless, IQ tests demonstrate a child's cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Public School Testing

All public schools in Arizona are required to test their students' IQ. All students scoring at the 97th percentile or above must be offered gifted programs. There are two tests most commonly administered at the discretion of the school district. The most common test is the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) which assesses reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative and spatial symbols. The other is the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) which is a language-free measurement of students' reasoning abilities.
