Dry itchy ears can develop for a number of reasons, including skin disorders and psychological disturbances. According to Dr. Timothy Hain of the Chicago Dizziness and Hearing clinic, dry itchy ears can simply be the result of overcleaning, lack of wax or a build-up of dead skin tissue and hair. Because the ear canal is so sensitive, even a slight amount of debris can make you crazed with itching. Vegetable oil can provide you with the relief you need, coating your ear canal and reducing the symptoms of irritation.
Step 1
Pour 1 inch of vegetable oil into a disposable cup. Insert the tip of a clean ear dropper into the vegetable oil.
Step 2
Squeeze the rubber bulb of the ear dropper and let go quickly. This will draw the vegetable oil up into the reservoir of the ear dropper. Tilt your head to the left, pressing your left ear against your shoulder.
Step 3
Hold the ear dropper over your right ear. Squeeze the bulb of the ear dropper, releasing three to four drops of vegetable oil into your ear canal.
Step 4
Keep your head tilted for two to three minutes, allowing the vegetable oil to settle in your ear. Bring your head back to center and wipe up any vegetable oil that flows out of your ear with a tissue.
Step 5
Repeat the process in your left ear. Tilt your head to the right and drop two to three drops of vegetable oil into the ear canal. Wait two to three minutes before bringing your head back to center.
Step 6
Repeat the vegetable oil treatment every couple of days until itching subsides.
Tips and Warnings
- If you are having trouble inserting the vegetable oil into your ear, ask a friend for help. Lie on a bed with one ear facing up, while the friend inserts the vegetable oil. Substitute mineral oil for vegetable oil if you do not have any on hand.
- If your dry itchy ear problems persist, see your doctor. The use of prescription medications may be necessary to treat the condition. Avoid cleaning your ears with cotton swabs, which can exacerbate the situation.
