A poison oak rash is the result of being exposed to sap from the poison oak plants. This oily sap is on the leaves, stems, and roots of these plants. Poison oak causes contact dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction that causes the skin to develop a blistering skin rash. The severity of the rash depends on how much sap is present on the skin and how sensitive your skin is. A poison oak rash can also develop when the plant is burned and the smoke comes into contact with the skin.
Step 1
Immediately wash the affected area with soap and water to get the oil off of the skin. It is important to scrub underneath the fingernails to make sure that no residue remains from scratching the affected area.
Step 2
Wash all garments that may have been exposed to the poison oak as well, using soap and water.
Step 3
Apply calamine lotion or take an oatmeal bath (you can buy oatmeal bath preparations at most beauty supply stores) to relieve itching. Apply these treatments, as needed, until the itching subsides.
Step 4
Take an oral antihistamine, such as the ones commonly used for allergies, to help suppress the allergic reaction. Take this medication according to the instructions on the package.
