Nosebleeds are a common childhood ailment that, while occasionally scary for child and parent, are usually no cause for concern. Several circumstances may cause nosebleeds in kids. Parents should seek medical attention if a nosebleed occurs with bleeding elsewhere, or if severe bruising is noticeable on a child's body at the time of the nosebleed.
Congestion
Nasal congestion occurs when a child has allergies or a head cold. According to AskDrSears.com, this congestion may result in the lining of the nose becoming red, sore and crusty inside the nasal tip, making the child vulnerable to nosebleeds.
Dry Air
During cold winter months, household heating systems warm up the air. According to KeepKidsHealthy, the indoor air becomes dry while it is getting warm, and consequently the nasal lining dries out, causing nosebleeds. Parents can help keep nasal passages moist by sitting their child in a steamy bath or shower for 20 minutes at a time. They can also increase the room moisture by adding a humidifier or vaporizer at night.
Infection
The nasal septum and sinus passages are vulnerable to viral and bacterial infections. When infections hit this area, the skin in front of or inside the nostrils can become red and crusty. This skin is easily irritated, according to AskDrSears.com, and prone to nosebleeds.
Trauma
Trauma is a common cause of pediatric nosebleeds, according to NetDoctor, and can result from even a simple hit to the nose. Nosebleeds can also occur if a child inserts a small foreign object up the nostril. Parents should take their child to a doctor to remove anything placed inside the nostril, as attempts at home can accidentally push the object farther into the nasal cavity.
Blood Conditions
A few rare bleeding conditions cause blood clotting or abnormal blood vessel growth. Both of these conditions cause frequent nosebleeds. If nosebleeds do not subside, a doctor will likely perform blood tests to make an accurate diagnosis; however, most children with these conditions have a family history of blood disorders, have other bleeding problems and often bruise easily.
