Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body and 99 percent of it is stored in your teeth and bones, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Calcium is needed to keep your bones strong as well as for secreting enzymes and hormones for your nervous system. It is also used by your blood vessels and muscles to expand and contract. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, probiotics are microorganisms hat resemble the beneficial microorganisms present in your intestines and help keep your flora healthy and able to absorb nutrients during the digestive process. You can take both calcium and probiotics as a supplement for your overall health.

Step 1

Incorporate food that is rich in both calcium and probiotics into your diet. According to Medline Plus, your daily intake of calcium should be 1,000 mg if you are an adult younger than 50 years old and 200 mg or more if you are over 50. Children need from 200 to 800 mg per day until they are four years old and require up to 1,300 mg per day until they reach the age of 14. Foods that contain the highest amounts of calcium include yogurt, sardines, cheddar cheese, milk and orange juice. There is no minimum requirement for probiotic intake. Foods rich in probiotics include yogurt, milk and miso. You can have yogurt for breakfast to intake calcium and probiotics together and have other probiotic and calcium rich foods throughout the day.

Step 2

Purchase probiotic supplements from your local health food store and take the recommended dosage with a glass of orange juice or milk to combine it with your calcium requirements.

Step 3

Purchase calcium supplements. According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, you will find calcium in the form of citrate or carbonate, with citrate being easily absorbed if you have low levels of stomach acid. Take your calcium supplements along with your probiotic supplements with a glass of milk if want more calcium or with plain water.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always consult with your primary health practitioner before taking any type of dietary supplement if you are under medication or medical treatment. Calcium helps prevent osteoporosis in senior women and it should be given as a supplement if there is a deficiency. Probiotics are good to take after taking antibiotics in order to restore the flora in your gut.
