The Nutrisystem diet plan centers around portion-controlled, low-calorie food provided through a convenient home-delivery system. The company prides itself on offering delicious, filling and healthy meals. While the home-delivery system supplies the majority of your food, you must supplement the entrees with certain grocery items for a complete, well-balanced diet.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Nutrisystem recommends adding fresh fruit to most meals or eating it as a snack throughout the day. Suggested options include apples, orange juice, plums and cherries. You must add your own vegetables to some delivered foods, such as hamburgers and salads. Additions include lettuce, broccoli, carrots and vegetable juice.

Dairy Products

Nutrisystem does not provide dairy products with its delivered foods due to spoilage concerns. It recommends supplementing pre-packaged breakfast items with light yogurt or fat-free milk. Cottage cheese with fruit makes a healthy snack, and you can add low-fat cheese to provided salads or pasta.

Dairy Alternatives

The company suggests trying dairy alternatives for people with lactose intolerance and because they are usually lower in fat and sugar. Soy milk and soy cheese can be used as food additions in the place of dairy products.

Healthy Carbohydrates

Kidney beans, oatmeal, multigrain bread and sweet potatoes can be enjoyed as meals and snacks or added to delivered entrees. Nutrisystem approves these healthy carbohydrates due to their low glycemic index, which means the body digests them slowly and does not endure potentially dangerous blood sugar spikes.

Healthy Fats

Nutrisystem allows certain foods with high amounts of heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These foods include peanut butter, avocados, almonds and salad dressing.

Meat and Fish

You can add hard-boiled eggs, chicken, turkey, tuna and shrimp to delivered entrees as well. These foods provide healthy protein.
